Everything you know about MMOs is wrong

That’s what NCsoft Europe’s Director of Product Development, Thomas Bidaux told delegates at the Develop conference in Brighton last week as he outlined four ways in which online gaming is about to be turned on it’s head.

This Joystiq article covers Thomas’ thoughts on the coming platform revolution, why all games will have an online element in the future and how the subscription model of MMO’s may become defunct in this constantly evolving entertainment space.

Thomas gave the example of a Tekken-style game which could revolve around its online component (rather than having multiplayer added in as an afterthought). Online rankings and tournaments allow players to test each others’ boasts and shoot for the moon; persistent characters give the player the chance to evolve, learning new moves and customising heavily; constant content updates keep the game fresh and appealing.
