Technical Director
We’re looking for a seasoned technical director to define, lead and implement the technology strategy for NCsoft Europe’s new development studio. You’ll be providing technical leadership, reporting directly to the executive management with a focus on game development, high-level strategy and long-term development issues.
Typical challenges include: oversee the planning and creation of infrastructure for the studio (build systems, toolchains, etc), seek out new improvements in process and technology, and work out how we can smoothly adopt them into our existing workflow; identifying long-term tech and development needs for the studio, and creating budgets and hiring personnel to fulfill those; mentoring lead and senior programmers; visiting and maintaining links with other internal studios to increase knowledge sharing, expertise sharing, and - where appropriate - technology sharing; working with technology leads and studio directors to define and implement long-term and short-term company-wide technology strategy; researching and evaluating middleware solutions; balancing the technology needs of product (individual game projects), studio (team development, resource allocation), and company (reusable tech, long-term value).
The perfect candidate would combine separate backgrounds in successful console development and MMO development, although someone particularly skilled in one but not the other would be able to grow into the role over time.
Experience & Requirements:
- Educated to degree level or equivalent
- At least 2 shipped titles
- At least 5 years game development experience
- Previous roles as lead programmer or technical director
- 8+ years game development experience
- Substantial experience of 2 or more of: MMO, PS3, Java, building a development studio
- Knowledge of the online games industry and MMO’s development desirable but not essential
Responsibilities:
- Overall technical leadership for the internal development studio
- Provide help and guidance to the lead programmers and their teams in all areas of programming
- Direct management of Tools and technology R&D teams
- Make strategic technology decisions (engine choices, team structures, etc)
- Represent the programming teams to local executive management
- Keep the studio aware of new development technologies and methodologies
- Aid in continued growth of studio through candidate interviews
- Other related duties as required
